Painting - Eugene Von GuerardEugene Von Guerard, painter and teacher, was born in Vienna in 1811. He studied landscape painting at the Dusseldorf Academy and traveled widely moving from London to Victoria in 1852. Heading for the goldfields, he arrived in Geelong and made many sketches of the mining districts around Ballarat. In 1855 James Dawson of Kangatong near Warrnambool commissioned Von Guerard to paint a landscape of Tower Hill. In 1870, Von Guerard was appointed the first Master of the School of Painting at the National gallery of Victoria. Retiring 11 years later, he returned to London where he died in 1901.
